LEGACY

(Maher 111)

"By giving thwarted youth opportunity to develop into healthy manhood under wholesome conditions which make for good citizenship, the Corps has strengethened Democractic government.  Its record demonstrates that the CCC is a sound national institution for conserving youth and natural resources." (Fechner 33)

("CCC Camp Enrollees in Massachusetts" mass.gov)

The motto of the CCC became “We Can Take It.”  The 9 year relief program helped over 3 million desperate, hopeless young men by destroying barriers that stood in their way to a real future. It tackled poverty, hunger, poor health, and lack of education.  Boys left the CCC as men and with hope.

"I know something of the Civilian Conservation Corps . . . I know this specifically.  Just this week our personnel manager reports to me that we hired about 150 of these boys who were former enrollees of the Corps.  He tells me these are the best disciplined, most courteous men that have come into our plant, and that they are all workers.  They are not afraid to work, and his report to me is, 'We would like to have many more men of that type coming into the plant.'" (Annual Report, 1941, 12-13)
